Stop Posing. Start Moving. This Is How Great Family Photos Actually Happen
Stop Posing. Start Moving. This Is How Great Family Photos Actually Happen
If I had a dollar for every time someone asked, “So… how do we pose?” I could retire and just photograph my dog for fun.
Here’s the secret:
You’re not here to pose. You’re here to move.
Family photos are not a statue competition. No one is judging your form. No whistles will be blown if your hand is in the “wrong” place. In fact, the faster you stop thinking and start doing, the better your photos will be.
Nothing needs to be perfect.
Nothing needs to be symmetrical.
No one needs to look at the camera the whole time like it owes you money.
My job is to guide you. Your job is to not wait.
If I say walk, walk.
If I say get close, get uncomfortably close.
If I say interact, don’t freeze and ask follow-up questions. Just do it.
Movement is everything.
Walk together.
Sway.
Spin kids around.
Lean into each other.
Whisper something ridiculous.
Make each other laugh.
Be a little extra sweet.
Be a little silly.
The magic happens in the in-between moments. The step before you stop. The laugh right after someone says something dumb. The way you naturally touch each other without thinking about it.
Easy Posing Tips That Don’t Feel Like Posing
Hands need a job. Hold hands, hug, play with hair, pick up kids, touch shoulders. Idle hands create awkward photos.
Get close. Then closer. If you think you’re close enough, take one more step in. Trust me.
Keep moving. Even small movement like rocking, swaying, or walking slowly makes a huge difference.
Interact, don’t perform. Talk to each other, not the camera. The camera is shy anyway.
Laugh early, laugh often. Forced laughs lead to real laughs. It’s science. Probably.
Think of your session less like a photoshoot and more like five minutes of hanging out with someone following you around with a camera and occasionally saying things like, “Yes, that. Do that again.”
You don’t need to nail anything. You don’t need to wait for instructions every second. I’ll guide you as we go, adjust when needed, and keep things flowing.
The more you move, the better it gets.
The more you play, the more real it feels.
The less you think, the more you’ll love the photos.
So don’t pose.
Don’t wait.
Just go for broke.
I’ve got you.
